Historic Preservation Month

May 1 - May 31

Historic Preservation Month is an opportunity to celebrate the buildings, stories, and landmarks that make Junction City unique. Through façade improvements, heritage tourism initiatives, public art, community partnerships, and projects like the restoration of downtown’s historic interpretive signs, Junction City Main Street works to preserve our community’s history while ensuring downtown remains a vibrant place for future generations. Historic preservation isn’t just about honoring the past, it’s about investing in the future of our downtown.

Take a look at a recap of our Historic Preservation efforts:

  • Advocating for the preservation and continued use of historic downtown buildings through revitalization and economic development efforts.
  • Supporting façade improvements and building rehabilitation projects that maintain the historic character of downtown Junction City.
  • Promoting heritage tourism by highlighting historic landmarks, cultural assets, and the stories that shaped our community.
  • Supporting the 7th Street Arts District and adaptive reuse of historic spaces to keep downtown vibrant and active.
  • Preserving local history through public art, murals, educational materials, and storytelling initiatives.
  • Partnering with local organizations to interpret and share Junction City’s history with residents and visitors.
  • Collaborating with the Geary County Historical Society to restore and update downtown’s historic interpretive signs, originally installed nearly 20 years ago as part of a major streetscape project, ensuring local stories remain accessible for future generations.
  • Hosting community events, tours, and unveilings that celebrate Junction City’s historic character while encouraging continued investment in downtown.
