On September 13th, 2024, Junction City Main Street was proudly announced as a recipient of the T-Mobile Hometown Grant. Out of 683 submissions, we were honored to be one of just 25 communities selected for this round. We’re excited to use this incredible opportunity to bring our vision of activated alleyways to life!
But what does it mean to “activate” our alleyways, and why is it such a big deal for our downtown?
What is an Activated Alleyway?

An activated alleyway is a space that is thoughtfully designed to engage the community and enhance the urban environment. Common features of activated alleyways include public art installations like murals or sculptures that bring color and creativity to the space. You’ll often find seating areas, offering a comfortable spot to rest, chat, or enjoy a coffee. To create a welcoming atmosphere, many alleyways are outfitted with decorative lighting, transforming them into cozy, well-lit areas perfect for evening strolls. Additionally, shade structures or greenery are often incorporated to provide relief from the sun and create a more inviting, relaxing environment. These elements together help turn previously unused spaces into lively community hubs.
Our vision for Junction City’s downtown is to create spaces that act as a “third place”—a concept where a person’s “first place” is their home, their “second place” is work or school, and their “third place” is where they spend their free time. By activating our alleyways, we are contributing to this vision, making downtown a place where people want to gather, connect, and enjoy their community.
While the image above is a schematic representation of this vision, it will continue to be tweaked and improved as construction begins to ensure we create the best possible experience for everyone. The alleys chosen to be beautified are Mural Mania Alley located between D’z Lounge and Spin Fitness, alley next to The Furniture Store, as well as the alley next to JC Nutrition.
Why Alleyways Matter for Junction City
Alleyways are often forgotten in the design and development of cities, but they hold so much potential for community engagement. For downtown Junction City, this project means more than just aesthetics—it’s about creating a more inclusive, walkable, and inviting downtown experience. By activating these alleyways, we can encourage people to spend more time downtown, support our local businesses, and enjoy public spaces that spark creativity and foster a sense of belonging.
Imagine strolling down a beautifully lit alley lined with local art or stumbling upon a pop-up market or live music performance. These are the kinds of experiences activated alleyways can bring to life, and we’re excited to make them a reality.
The T-Mobile Hometown Grant: A Game Changer
This transformative vision for downtown Junction City is possible thanks to the T-Mobile Hometown Grant. Awarded to small towns across the country, this grant helps local communities implement projects that enhance their downtowns, strengthen local economies, and enrich the quality of life for residents.
Winning the T-Mobile Hometown Grant is a huge win for Junction City. It not only provides the financial backing needed to bring this idea to life but also highlights our community’s dedication to revitalizing our downtown. This grant empowers us to move forward with the activation of our alleyways, making a lasting impact that will benefit residents, visitors, and local businesses for years to come.
What’s Next?
With this grant, Junction City Main Street will work to transform select alleyways downtown into engaging public spaces. These spaces will be designed with our community in mind, showcasing local art, offering areas for relaxation, and creating opportunities for events and gatherings. The revitalized alleyways will breathe new life into the downtown district, making it a destination for both locals and visitors.
We can’t wait to see the energy and creativity this project brings to Junction City. As the alleyways come to life, keep an eye out for updates on the design and development process. And most importantly, come downtown to experience these new spaces for yourself!
